You actually used the correct form of the word "formerly" twice - it's something they used to recognise but now have not formally announced they have changed their position.

Words are important Andrew, you need to get them right in a discussion or you look ill-informed - USA did indeed formerly recognise Taiwan as part of China but have changed their formal recognition to one of ambiguity to suit thier political needs.

If you are right, can you please provide me the address of the Japanese, Australian, Canadian and US embassies in Taipei? I can't seem to find them on the map
