Are Chinese entering the USA illegally in droves?

Wherever you are in the world welcome to another edition of Jerry’s Take on China and today, I’m starting a new program. I’ll still be doing one or two episodes a week as usual but once a week I’m going to take one or two news items that have appeared in the last few days and dissect it with a view to showing how we’re being misled.

Someone I told about this a few days ago asked me if I am sure I can find one or two items a week — I’m certain I can find one or two an hour but please, if you have one, something that you’ve read about China and thought this is impossible, feel free to send it to me, preferably with a searchable line that will help me find it as this platform often loses replies when a link is attached.

I’ll do my best to look for it and tell the viewers the real story. Today, I have a great one. The number of illegal Chinese people crossing the border has increased by 920% was the headline. Here are the facts…

If you visit China, you’ll see that the numbers of people who are unhappy are so low, that they’re really hard to find — I’m not talking about people with personal problems, or mental health issues, I’m talking about day-to-day life and their general satisfaction.

This was recently verified by an IPSOS survey which found China to be at the very top of the happiness scale and a San Diego University Survey which found that China was at the top of the satisfaction scale — A Harvard University 13-year study found that China had an increasing government satisfaction rate which at the time they registered it a couple of years ago, was 95.5%. Finally, the Edelman Trust Barometer, placed China at the very top of the world in terms of people who trust their government.

So, if you believe tweets and headlines where they say the number of “Chinese refugees crossing the southern border of the USA has increased by 920%”, I’m here to tell you that you aren’t being misinformed, but you are being very seriously misled.

Let’s look a little deeper into this sensational tweet put out by a Republican Party Twit.

Looking deeper into the story, what Chief Border Patrol Agent actually said was, on March 17th :

90 additional Chinese National apprehensions on a single day; the most encountered since 2010 and brings the total to one thousand six hundred and sixty seven for the FYTD.

First, let’s look at what FYTD means: it means the Financial Year to Date. When does the Financial Year start? Well, it starts on the 1st July. So, by the time 17th March came around, there have been 260 days since the recording process started. This isn’t two and a half months into the year, it’s eight and a half months into the year.

Now, let’s get that into perspective: there have been, according to the chief of border patrol, 1,667 Chinese nationals attempt to cross the border in 8.5 months and that’s an average of 6.45 per day. That may seem like a lot but, when we compare it to the 2.76 million people who were caught crossing the border the 2022 FY it doesn’t even register, the average is 7,561 every day.

At the current rate of Chinese crossing the border, it will take them 1,172 days, or 3.2 years to reach the number of people crossing the border every day.

But there’s one more thing to consider: if it’s grown by 920% to 1667 in the last year — what was the number last year — that number was less than 2.

How’s that for perspective?

What they want you to read is the 920% increase. Or the 90 people a day they aren’t interested in giving you the whole picture, they’re interested just in scaring you about this influx of “Yellow Peril”.

But there’s more. How many of these Chinese nationals were from Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan, how many of them left China many years ago and have lived illegally, or even legally elsewhere, how many of them are escaping justice in China for crimes?

Any good journalist would have asked those questions but they aren’t interested in journalism, they’re interested in scaring people into thinking China is a threat and Chinese are taking over.

And this is one of the very clever ways we are being lied to by our media.
